Me to We
Me to We is a new kind of social enterprise for people who want to help change the world with their daily choices.
Free The Children founders Craig and Marc Kielburger believe that creating true global change means empowering young people in North America
to be active leaders in making this change come about. They achieve this goal by showing people how their everyday choices and actions can and do have
an impact on our global community.
Me to We at Blessed Sacrament
The Blessed Sacrament Me to We team was organized during the 2007-2008 school year and attended the first National Me to We Day conference in October 2007.
The goal of the annual conference is to motivate youth to raise awareness and funds for schoolbuilding, clean water wells, health care and alternative income programs in the developing world
in the effort to help create global equality and end poverty.
They were asked to focus on the U.N. Millennium Goals and chose to focus their efforts on children's education. To accomplish this goal, they achieved the following:
- sponsored the Snowball Dance-a-thon for St. Gaspar's
- created the "Knit One for me Purl Two for You" club and made blankets for children at the Village of Hope AIDS orphanage in Dodoma Tanzania.
2008-2009 school year
The Me to We team continues to raise awareness and funds for the developing world:
- October 17, 2008: a group of 12 grade 7 and 8 students along with 2 dedicated teachers attended the 2nd annual National Me To We Day conference at the Ricoh Coliseum; they joined 8,000 other students from across Canada.
- The team met with Bob Fukumoto, Director of The Romania Project which is a ministry of International Teams Canada. This charitable organization supports orphans in the region of Cluj, Romania, and helps build relationships and meets physical and emotional needs through ministry team retreats, dental clinics, summer camps, and team mentors.
- December 2008: the team organized the Thanksgiving Food Drive and donated several boxes of food items to the Good Shepherd Food Bank.
- February 2009: Knit One for me Purl Two for You club has started; it is hoped that each child will be able to complete two knitting projects, one of which will go to The Romania Project.
- February 12, 2009: the annual Snow Ball Dance-a-thon will take place with funds raised donated in support of St. Gaspar's Primary School in Dodoma, Tanzania East Africa.
- February 2009: Valentine candy grams are being sold to support The Romania Project. The funds raised will be used to purchase firewood for the Romanian orphanages.
The Me to We meets a few times monthly and continues to plan activities for the school year.
